ISSUE:
Pulse Engineering, a UKAS approved ISO 9001 precision CNC subcontractor based near High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, provides high quality machining services across a wide range of sectors.
The company had been using a German manufactured semi synthetic soluble cutting fluid that had begun to present several challenges across the workshop. Operators reported increasingly unpleasant odours, reduced sump life, and visible separation of the fluid. On investigation, Certas Lubricant Solutions Application Specialist identified high levels of microorganisms within the system and poor overall stability, leading to excessive coolant usage and unnecessary maintenance downtime.
In addition to improving stability and odour control, Pulse Engineering sought a more environmentally responsible solution that would also deliver cost efficiencies and enhanced operator safety.
SOLUTION:
Certas Lubricant Solutions recommended Q8 Brunel XF753, a high performance metalworking fluid formulated with a unique synthesised base oil package derived from natural gas. This advanced formulation meets the latest environmental and HSE standards while providing excellent biological resistance and long term sump stability.
A trial was conducted on GF Mikron Mill E 700 U and GF Mikron HPM 450U multi axis machining centres. The application included high precision milling operations on aluminium alloys 5083, 6061, and 6082.
Certas technical team provided full on site support throughout the trial, implementing Fluid Command coolant monitoring to maintain optimum conditions and ensure compliance with HSE guidelines.
OUTCOME AND VALUE:
The switch to Q8 Brunel XF753 delivered immediate and measurable improvements:
- Complete elimination of unpleasant odours
- No fluid separation or foaming issues
- Significantly cleaner machine screens and work areas
- No sticky residues or deposits on components
- Improved visibility and working environment for operators
- Noticeable reduction in waste fluid volumes
- Tramp oil now limited to spent slideway lubricant only
- Extended sump life and reduced disposal requirements
- Lower overall commercial operating costs
CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL:
“I was introduced to the Certas Lubricants technician through a consultancy that had previously achieved excellent results with them. Our existing cutting fluid had become increasingly difficult to manage due to the hard make up water affecting stability and sump life.
From the first visit, it was clear the Certas Application Specialist understood our challenges and identified the right product immediately. Within a short time, odours disappeared, machine surfaces were cleaner, and both components and swarf rinsed off effortlessly.
Pulse Engineering would highly recommend Q8 Brunel XF753 and the outstanding technical support provided by Certas Lubricant Solutions.”
